Maneater

Maneater begins with a shark. A small one. A pup, really, barely a threat to the bloated frat boys cannonballing into the toxic bayou. Fast forward a few dozen corpses and several mutations later, and that same shark is wearing bone armor and electrocuting yachts mid-flip. If that sounds ridiculous, well, it is. That’s the point.

Set in the gloriously grotesque waters of fictional Port Clovis, Maneater plays like a Discovery Channel documentary directed by the producers of Jackass. The story? A revenge plot, told through the lens of a trashy reality show starring Scaly Pete, a Cajun shark hunter with a grudge and fewer fingers than he started with. Chris Parnell narrates it all with a deadpan so sharp you could fillet tuna on it.

Gameplay is simple: eat, evolve, and repeat. You chomp turtles for protein, gators for sport, and tourists for dessert. Feeding fuels your mutations, gills that glow, tails that stun, teeth that drain life like vampiric garden shears. Combat is messy but gleeful, like a wet bar fight between torpedoes. It’s not always elegant (the camera has the spatial awareness of a plastic bag), but when it works, it works.

Sure, missions recycle more than a municipal waste plant, and yes, you might fight the camera more than actual predators, but once you’re flopping onto beaches to drag sunbathers into the sea, none of that really matters. Maneater isn’t deep. It’s loud. It’s bloody. And it’s the only game where you can body slam a yacht with a shark the size of an SUV.

And honestly? That’s beautiful.
