Doki Doki Literature Club! is the best game I wish I could erase from my memory just to experience all over again. At first blush, it’s a pastel-drenched slice-of-life visual novel: you’re a reluctant high schooler dragged into a club filled with cute anime girls who write poetry and make small talk. You think you know where this is going. You don’t.

It’s almost unfair to describe Doki Doki in a traditional review format, because the best way to play it is with as little information as possible. But here’s the trick: the game knows that you know what visual novels look like, and it uses that against you. From its pixel-perfect presentation to its saccharine soundtrack, everything is built to lull you into a false sense of familiarity before pulling the rug out from under your feet and setting the floor on fire.

Mechanically, it’s all straightforward: read dialogue, choose responses, build relationships, and, in what seems like a cute twist, construct poems to impress your favorite clubmate. But lurking beneath this bubbly surface is one of the most clever, disturbing, and fourth-wall-demolishing experiences in modern gaming.

The “Plus” version sweetens the deal with extra side stories, a hauntingly good soundtrack, and behind-the-scenes bonuses that make replays even more compelling.

It’s not just a visual novel. It’s a trapdoor. And once you fall through, you won’t come out the same. Just… make sure you don’t promise to spend the most time with Monika.
